FCIP Admission

Applying to begin the FCIP

The FCIP represents the culmination of a learning path that includes industry work experience, completion of the CIP, and completion of other educational experiences. To pursue the FCIP, you will need to apply for admission to the program and meet the entry requirements.

Skills and attributes

In addition to meeting the formal admission requirements detailed below, you will need key skills and attributes. You will need the ability to:

  • Critically assess text pitched at university level
  • Express yourself well in writing
  • Deliver a spoken presentation clearly
  • Do financial calculations drawing on math skills normally taught at the secondary school level
  • Manage your time effectively and commit up to 15 hours per week to each course
Admission pathways

Regular route

To apply for admission to the FCIP program through the Regular route, you will need the following:
  • Current Insurance Institute membership
  • Current CIP Society membership (for CIP graduates)
  • Prior completion of the CIP course and work experience requirements
  • An undergraduate degree from a Canadian degree-granting institution or validated international equivalent

Advanced CIP route

To apply for admission to the FCIP program through the Advanced CIP route, you will need the following:
  • Current Insurance Institute membership
  • Current CIP Society membership (for CIP graduates)
  • Prior completion of the CIP course and work experience requirements
  • Completion of the Advanced CIP program requirements
  • Completion of at least five years’ work experience in property and casualty insurance or related financial services

Admission documents

Before applying for admission to the FCIP, you will need to gather some documentation:
Canadian transcript 

If you are applying with an undergraduate degree (Regular route), you will need to obtain and submit copies of official transcripts from the institution(s) you attended. An image of a diploma or certificate is not considered equivalent to a transcript.

International transcript + letter

If your degree is from an institution outside Canada, then in addition to your transcript you will also need to obtain and submit a letter from a recognized comparative education service confirming evaluation of the transcript.

Examples of recognized comparative education services include:

  • The Comparative Education Service at the University of Toronto School of Continuing Studies
  • World Education Services Canada
  • Direction de l’enregistrement et de l’évaluation comparative of the Gouvernement du Québec

Work experience form

If you are applying through the Advanced CIP route, you will need to complete and submit the FCIP work experience form. Once you have completed the CIP, you can access the FCIP work experience form by logging into My Account.

Timelines and application process

Timelines

Admission documents and payment must be received by July 15 for the fall semester start, or November 15 for the winter semester start.

Admission is not confirmed and course registration cannot be completed until all required items have been received and reviewed, including the application payment. Please ensure that you allow plenty of lead time to gather the required documentation and meet the deadlines. In particular:

  • Transcripts may take several weeks or several months to arrive, depending on the institution.
  • For international degrees, the review by a comparative education service can also take weeks or months. Please contact such services directly to enquire about their transcript review time frames and processes.
  • If your fees are being paid by your employer, remember to allow time to get the payment approved and issued, including any potential delays during vacation periods.

It is your responsibility to ensure you obtain all of the required admission items in advance of the admission deadlines.

Important dates
  • Fall semester: All admission components submitted by July 15
  • Winter semester: All admission components submitted by November 15

Application process

Once you have collected the required documents and are ready to apply, here are the steps:
Application

You will be asked to confirm the level of education you’ve completed, and to upload your transcripts (Regular route) or work experience form (Advanced CIP route) electronically during the application process.

You can either pay the admission application fee by credit card when you apply, or you may choose “Get a Quote” to request a printable invoice, which you can mail to us with a cheque or money order.

At this point, your application will be pending review.

Review

Please allow 7–10 business days for your admission request to be processed. The FCIP team will review your application, validate your payment and review your documentation.

Approval

Once your application has been approved, you will receive a confirmation email notifying you that you can register for courses during the next available registration period.

Course registration

When the next registration period opens, log in and register for your first course.
