Broker/Agent Level 1 Licensing in BC

The general insurance licensing program offers the education required by the Insurance Council of BC to obtain a Level 1 Salesperson Licence - Autoplan and homeowner policy sales. It uses topics from the Insurance Institute’s General Insurance Essentials (GIE) course, but with a single exam for licensing purposes.

There are five options for you to achieve this education.

General Insurance Essentials (GIE) 1. Level 1 Licensing Home Study with the Insurance Institute of BC
On-demand exam covering both GIE C81, C82 textbooks and BC auto supplement
General Insurance Essentials (GIE) 2. Level 1 Licensing In-class learning with our college partners:
Douglas College (New Westminster), Langara College (Vancouver), Camosun College (Victoria), Vancouver Island University (Nanaimo)
On-demand exam covering both GIE C81, C82 textbooks and BC auto supplement
General Insurance Essentials (GIE) 3. Level 1 Licensing Live Virtual courses with the Insurance Institute of BC
On-demand exam covering both GIE C81, C82 textbooks and BC auto supplement
Chartered Insurance Professional (CIP) C11 and C130: Distance, in-class or virtual class with the Insurance Institute
Two separate courses, with two separate exams, on a set semester exam schedule: December, April and July

Requirement for licence:
Once the education component of your Level 1 licence is complete, the successful candidate is required to have the sponsorship (employment) of a licensed insurance agency in order to apply for a Level 1 licence from the Insurance Council of BC.
