Understanding Serious Injury is a five-module program that focuses on understanding the injury, the person and the impact of the injury on the person.

Throughout this program, you'll be exposed to industry best practices, industry specialists and real-life examples that are delivered using a variety of learning styles. You'll gain a broad perspective on accident benefits and bodily injury with a focus on the injured person.

You'll also give your career a boost by gaining the skills and knowledge you need to better manage the recovery of complex injuries.

This program has been developed by the Insurance Institute of Ontario in partnership with the Ontario Insurance Adjusters’ Association.

About the Program

Understanding Serious Injury is a five-module program. Learning is specific to handling accident benefits and bodily injury claims, so adjusters who focus on these two areas will find the most value.

There are no exams in the Understanding Serious Injury program. Instead, the final module is designed as an intensive case study that will assess your progress by drawing on the learning outcomes from the previous four modules.

Who Should Attend

Understanding Serious Injury has been developed specifically for junior and intermediate bodily injury and accident benefits adjusters. We recommend that you know how to adjust a claim before beginning the first module.

Program Modules

The five Understanding Serious Injury program modules cover the progression of adjusting a serious injury under new guidelines and measures. Program modules cover a wide range of material from medical terminology, anatomy, acute or chronic injuries, psychological and sociological impacts on injuries, rehabilitation providers and assessors, and structured settlements.
