Canada has a new top stolen car
The Toyota RAV4 is now Canada’s most stolen car.
That’s according to Équité Association’s Annual Top 10 Most Stolen Vehicles List for 2024, released today.
The RAV4 unseats the Toyota Highlander, which was the previous year’s top stolen car. Before that, the Honda CR-V held top spot for two years.
“Newer model SUVs, particularly those with keyless security vulnerabilities, remain prime targets for sophisticated criminal networks nationally, especially in Quebec and Ontario,” Équité’s report says.
Of the more than 554,000 RAV4s insured across Canada, 2,080 were stolen in 2024, for a theft rate of 0.38%. The 2021 model year is most often stolen, according to Équité.
The RAV4’s position as the top stolen vehicle reflects its “high demand, global serviceability, and high resale value,” the report says.
There’s good and bad news for Canadians in Équité’s report. On the plus side, auto theft in Canada declined 19%. Unfortunately, auto theft insurance losses still exceeded $1 billion annually in 2024.
“The Toyota RAV4’s appearance at the top of the list is a clear sign that organized criminal networks are not slowing down; they are simply shifting their tactics,” said Bryan Gast, Équité’s national vice president of investigative services. “We’re seeing a shift towards stolen vehicles being re-VINed for sale or disassembled in illegal chop shops and sold for parts.”
There’s been a 47.5% spike in thefts of high-value ($200K+) luxury vehicles across Canada, Équité notes. The fraud prevention association suggests criminals are leaning toward bigger payouts, as theft becomes riskier due to law enforcement crackdowns and government attention.
The top stolen cars in Canada, by number of thefts
Following closely behind the RAV4 by number of thefts (2,018) is the Dodge Ram 1500 Series. This has been the second most stolen car since 2022. This truck has a theft rate of 0.39%, out of the 521,734 Dodge Ram vehicles insured nationwide.
