Risk Management Certificate Program Courses

The Risk Management courses are delivered through facilitated online learning. There is no weekly live class, but all students follow the same weekly schedule for readings, assignments, and graded online interaction under the guidance of an instructor. Course materials include a text book and course guide. For more information visit program fees.

Time commitment: About 6-8 hours a week per course to complete readings, learning activities and online discussion.

We recommend that you take only one course at a time, and that you complete the courses in the order listed.

Please note:

Each Insurance Institute Risk Management course has its own final examination. You can write these exams either through our Virtual Proctoring system or in person at one of our examination centres.

To earn the CRM designation, you will also need to write the separate CRM exams offered by GRMI. Please see below for further information about CRM requirements.

Canadian Risk Management Designation

The Insurance Institute of Canada is pleased to be an authorized provider of risk management courses that meet the foundational course requirements for the CRM designation. The CRM is recognized by RIMS and awarded by the Global Risk Management Institute (GRMI)

Please note that the Insurance Institute of Canada does not does not issue the CRM designation itself or administer the standardized CRM exams. The exams administered by the Insurance Institute form part of the course grade only.

If you are pursuing the Canadian Risk Management (CRM) designation, once registered in a risk management course, you must contact the Global Risk Management Institute to register for the corresponding GRMI standardized exam.

Please consult the Global Risk Management Institute for complete details of the steps for obtaining the CRM designation.

RISK MANAGEMENT EXAM SCHEDULE

Final exams for the Risk Management courses are 90 minutes long. Final examinations are offered in a Virtually Proctored Computer Based Format or In-person exam format. To enhance question security and minimize question exposure, The Insurance Institute of Canada’s examinations use multiple examination forms. A statistical process of forms equating is used to ensure that the examination forms are of equal difficulty. The result is that the performance required to meet the standardized passing score is the same for each examination form and that student results from different forms are comparable.

Please note that the final exams use a different software platform from the course itself and involve different access procedures. Please carefully review all information on our Examinations webpage before your examination.

Spring 2023 Courses July 4–17, 2023
Fall 2023 Courses December 1–15, 2023
Winter 2024 Courses TBD
Spring 2024 Courses TBD

NB: Students pursuing the CRM designation must also pass separate exams administered by GRMI. See the Canadian Risk Management Designation section above.
