Your expert panel:
Damian Shepherd:
Damian is a partner at CBM Lawyers and was admitted to the Alberta bar in 2003, also a member of the British Columbia and North West Territories Law Societies. He has practiced insurance defence for his entire career, handling almost every type of file that auto and propety & casualty insurers have to offer. Also conducting Queen's bench trials and appeals over the last 10 years.

Laurie Balfour:
Prior to joining the Automobile Insurance Rate Board in 2018, she served as Senior Manager, Prudential Supervision within the Office of the Superintendent of Insurance for over nine years. Prior to joining the Alberta Government, she worked in the private sector as the Vice President of Corporate Services for an Alberta based non-profit organization. Laurie is a Chartered Professional Accountant and holds a Masters in Business Administration. Laurie actively serves on numerous national committees for the Canadian Council of Insurance Regulators (CCIR) the General Insurance Statistical Agency (GISA) and the Canadian Automobile Insurance Rate Regulators (CARR).

David Sorenson:
Deputy Superintendent of Insurance, Government of Alberta

David has played key leadership roles in insurance companies in B.C. and Alberta.  He has lead claims teams through numerous catastrophic losses, including the 2011 Slave Lake fire and 2013 floods.

Before joining government as Deputy Superintendent of Insurance in 2014, David was Regional Director of Claims for a national property and casualty insurer.

David is a Fellow, Chartered Insurance Professional (FCIP), and also holds a Bachelor of Arts degree. He is a certified instructor with the Insurance Institute of Canada, where he also volunteers for Career Connections.

David Mulyk:
Dave Mulyk is the Executive Director of Pension and Insurance Policy in Alberta. He joined Government in September 2001 as a pension regulator before transitioning to pension policy in June 2014. In March 2018 he was formally named the Executive Director of Pension Policy. On September 2019, he further assumed responsibility for the Insurance Policy portfolio. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Math and Economics, as well as an MBA, both from the University of Alberta.
