Seminar Session A (attended by all)
High Times: Recreational Cannabis Use and Insurance
Since the legalization of recreational cannabis use, insurers are adapting to the changing landscape by reconsidering their policy language and underwriting guidelines. To continue to guard against the risks associated with cannabis, both the federal and provincial legislative framework for legalization must be considered. This seminar will review the insurance considerations raised by the production, sale, and use of cannabis in Canada as it applies to property, auto and commercial policies, both now and in the future.
Satinder Sidhu, Partner – Clark Wilson LLP
Seminar Session B (your choice of one)
Are We Ready for Extreme Weather Events? An Engineering Manifesto
Climate change and global warming have resulted in increasingly unpredictable weather patterns. As such, extreme weather conditions are experienced around the globe as never seen before. This presentation will provide a high-level overview of the potential risks for our industry associated with extreme weather, as well as a discussion of various engineered solutions to address and mitigate such risks.

Environmental Contamination & Coverage - Who Knew it was Fun!

This seminar will trace the development of pollution exclusions, discuss current relevant exclusions, and shed light on the challenges of handling these types of claims.
Nigel Trevethan, Partner – Harper Grey LLP
Seminar Session C (your choice of one)
The Changing Direction of Wildfires
Catastrophic wildfires such as Kelowna, Slave Lake and Fort McMurray have burned faster and spread farther than anyone could’ve imagined. Understanding the effect of climate change and using this knowledge to predict future large loss wildfires is just the beginning. While this presentation starts with a climate change discussion, it quickly moves to the impact this has on the insurance industry. Using case studies, subrogation will be explored in depth including topics such as ignition sources, human and government liability, building materials, and landscaping.
Shirley Niven, P.Eng. CFEI, WFBS, Forensic Engineer – Origin and Cause
Social Media Meltdown: The Online Economy and Insurance Risks
The emergence of apps and websites that users publicize and monetize aspects of their lives pose new insurance risks. Whether driving for Uber, renting out their house on AirBNB or cultivating followings on social media, the new economy and new ways of expression pose unique insurance challenges. This seminar will discuss insurance risks arising out of the “gig economy” and online publications, gaps in existing insurance coverage, and products that have emerged to address these shortfalls.
