Convocation FAQ

Now that you've completed your diploma, what's next? Here are some answers to FAQs on your designation, diploma and convocation.

Designation

What is required to complete the CIP program to attain my designation?
You need to have fulfilled at least one year of full-time employment in the general insurance, life insurance, or related financial services industries, and passed the five mandatory, three applied and two elective courses required to make up your CIP designation. Please ensure you have your employer listed on your online member account as this information is used to determine your work experience. A letter of employment may be required if we're unable to identify your employer in on your member account.

When will I receive confirmation that I've completed the CIP program?
You will be mailed a letter from the CEO of the Insurance Institute congratulating you on your achievement approximately six weeks from the date all grades have been released per semester.

When can I begin using my designation?
As a professional association, the Insurance Institute has a Board of Governors that meet twice annually—once in May for the Insurance Institute of Canada Executive Meeting, and once in October for the Annual General Meeting. At each of these meetings, the board elects new CIP graduates; meaning that after students successfully complete their final exam, they will be “elected” as a graduate at one of these two meetings. Students who successfully complete their exams in the stated exam sessions, are permitted to begin using their CIP designation on the following dates:
• December exam session – June 1
• April exam session – June 1
• July exam session – November 1

Diploma

Can my diploma be emailed to me?
No. Your diploma is beautifully framed as a presentable piece to recognize your achievement.

When will I receive my diploma?
Your diploma will be presented in-person at one of three BC convocation events.

Convocation

When and where is convocation?
Graduates will be invited to attend the event near their place of residence or the location of their choice. There are three BC convocation event locations:
• Vancouver and Victoria in November
• Kelowna in January (dependent on number of graduates)

When will my convocation be?
Graduates who have completed their last course and requirements in the consecutive December, April and July exam sessions will be invited to convocation in the upcoming November. For convocation 2023, it will be students completing their last course in the December 2022, April 2023 and July 2023 exam sessions.

When will I receive my invitation to attend convocation?
Invitations to graduates will be sent in September. Ticket sales for convocation events will open shortly after.

How will I receive my diploma at convocation?
Graduates will be announced  one-by-one as they cross the stage. A picture will be taken as you're presented with your diploma by the CEO and Chair of the Board of Governors of the Insurance Institute of Canada.

What happens at convocation?
A meal will be served, followed by speeches and a presentation of diplomas and awards. Graduate achievements are celebrated in the presence of guests including Insurance Institute of BC Council members, industry leaders, fellow graduates, colleagues, family, and friends. Convocation events recognize the importance of professional development, as well as create opportunities for industry networking.
