Virtual proctoring requires you to install software on your laptop/computer, allowing an online proctor to monitor your exam via your webcam, microphone, and system activity. The virtual proctor will closely monitor your on-screen activity and off-screen behavior.
If the proctor notices any unusual behavior during the exam, they will notify the Institute so that appropriate action can be taken. You are expected to follow all proctor instructions and Institute exam policies..
After you submit your exam online, your grade will be posted within 2 business days, or within 14 days for manually graded exams. You’ll be notified by email as soon as your grade is available.

Like the paper exam, RIBO Entry Level (Level 1) candidates only will have access to a digital version of policy wordings during their virtual exam. The wordings candidates have access to is:
- Ontario Automobile Policy (OAP1) Owner’s Policy
* NEW: RIBO has confirmed that effective January 1, 2022, candidates (including those doing rewrites) will no longer have access to the Comprehensive Homeowner, Tenant, Condominium Unit Owner Package Policy wording (also known as the habitational wording booklet) during the exam.
The habitational wording booklet was initially designed to be used as a reference tool for the case study section of the exam and with its removal in April 2021, RIBO’s Council has determined the habitational section of the exam does not require the habitational wording booklet to answer the questions. Candidates will be able to use their acquired knowledge of property insurance and skills in order to deduce the correct answer for exam questions related to property and condominium owner policies. RIBO did not see a change in pass rates when the policy wording booklets were unavailable for the online exam during a three-month period in 2020.
Additionally, RIBO Unrestricted Technical and Unrestricted Farm Technical exams will have access to form wordings for the forms recognition section of the exams.
Finally, all RIBO auto equivalency exams will have access to the following policy wordings during their virtual exam:
- Ontario Automobile Policy (OAP1) Owner’s Policy
Once you start the exam, you will be able to open the wordings by clicking a link in Question 1 of the exam. The wordings will open in a new browser tab. They will be password protected and the password will be provided to you.
Opening additional tabs will result in a breach of examination rules and may result in the refusal of the individual’s registration application, a suspension of the registration or a review by the Qualification & Registration Committee.
The Insurance Institute provides reasonable accommodations to individuals who have documented disabilities (physical, mental or learning disabilities).
To apply for accommodations, submit a completed Accommodation Request Form with required medical documentation to the Insurance Institute no later than ten business days prior to the start of the preferred administration period. An exam grade will be generated within 5 business days of your exam. You will receive an email notification when your grade is ready to view. The email will contain instructions on how to access and download your exam results.
If you are successful in your Level 1 or Equivalency exam attempt: and have already found employment with a RIBO brokerage, you are ready to apply for your license. Please go to RIBO's Registration Checklist page for instructions on submitting your application.
If you are successful in your Level 2 Unrestricted Technical or Level 2 Unrestricted Management, the Farm Technical or Travel Health exam attempt: submit your score report and all other required documentation to RIBO by email to licensing@ribo.com to request the update to your license.
Remark: If the examination score is three marks or less from the pass mark, the constructed response questions will automatically be remarked before releasing the results. This process can take up to two (2) weeks.
If you are unsuccessful: you should refer to RIBO’s policy on rewrites on their Examinations page. You can then register again for another examination.
An appeal is a re-evaluation of the accuracy of the original marking. The following exams are eligible for appeal:
• RIBO Unrestricted Management
• RIBO Unrestricted Technical Exam
• RIBO Technical Farm Examination
An appeal is available to RIBO candidates who received an unsuccessful final mark which is more than three marks below the overall pass mark. Candidates can request an appeal within 7 days from the last day of the specific examination administration. A fee of $115 +tax will apply. Requests can be submitted via email at appeals@insuranceinstitute.ca
The candidate will receive an updated score report within 4-6 weeks of receiving the appeal request. Please note that it is rare for a mark to change, and it may increase or decrease depending on the outcome of the re-evaluation. Candidates whose exam mark is 3 marks or less from the pass mark will have their exams automatically remarked before their scores are released. This process can take up to two (2) weeks.
Students who are eligible to rewrite a failed examination should register for the rewrite when applying for an appeal to avoid missing the entry deadline date. If the result of an appeal is not available prior to the examination, the student may request that the rewrite be deferred to the next session.
An appeal is the final review of a student’s marks, and no further reviews or appeals are available.
