2019 Established Leader
Monica Woldring, CIP
Port Coquitlam, BC
Monica’s insurance career spans a broad range of experiences, and she has touched the lives of many along the way, inspiring others through her strong mentorship and leadership skills. “When we hear the name Monica Woldring in our BC insurance marketplace, we instantly picture the various hats (literally and figuratively!) that she has and continues to wear,” writes her nominator.
Monica began her journey in the insurance industry with roles in various insurance companies and brokerages, and by the early 1980’s, became a partner in an independent brokerage. Later, she sold her interest in the brokerage, and took on the role of General Manager of BCAA Insurance Agency, where she led 120 staff to bigger and better sales through excellence in service. She went on to become the President of VanCity Insurance services, and during her tenure, the brokerage grew to be the 10th largest ICBC broker at the time.
In the 90s, Monica developed a training business serving the Western Canadian insurance industry, taking her in-house seminars on topics ranging from home evaluations to E&O, to brokerages across the region. Later still, she returned to the brokerage side, and then worked as an Account Executive for Policy Works Inc., a commercial management software company, where her vast experience helped brokers to build and better manage their processes.
In her current role, Monica manages the commercial insurance department of leading-edge brokerage, InsureLine. She has developed several package programs that have helped land several large accounts, a goal she hopes to replicate to develop business and provide excellent coverage, while remaining cost efficient for her clients.
Monica has been an avid advocate of the industry for decades. Since 1992, she has taken various instructional roles at local post-secondary institutions to ensure a foundation of insurance education for the future professionals in our industry. She was Acting Program Head at Langara College when BC’s first insurance program was established. Graduates of the program were the first generation of students to actually choose a career in insurance. Monica was also instrumental in developing the BCIT insurance program, and continues to instruct two of the broker courses. Many of her students have become leaders themselves, and many give back by volunteering in the industry themselves.
Monica has been an active member of the Insurance Institute of BC, serving on various committees, including the Seminar and Event Committees. Monica has also instructed numerous Insurance Institute courses and was on the writing team for the C14 textbook on auto insurance. She was also the Institute’s first online course instructor in 2008, helping to pioneer what was at the time a new mode of instruction. For all her work, Monica was awarded the distinguished Volunteer of the Year Award by the Institute in 2011.
Monica also spent eight years on the Salute BC Committee, which oversees the selection of the Insurance Person of the Year and Rising Star in BC and the associated gala event.
“It takes an amazing leader and someone who truly cares about raising the quality of lives and careers through community, education, and professionalism to be able to achieve what Monica has in her decades of giving back to our industry,” writes her nominator.
Over the years Monica has been involved in many volunteer roles outside of the industry as well, including Chairman of the Board of Managers for her Church, Board Member and President for the Vancouver Sea Festival, and Parade Coordinator and Assembly Manager for the Pacific National Exhibition.
Monica currently serves as the Secretary for the Rotary Club of New Westminster, and is incoming President, having previously served in that role in 2010 and 2011. The Rotary Club supports both local and global initiatives, including multiple New Westminster youth programs, as well as a water treatment initiative in Africa, and a school for mothers and children in Bangladesh.
“I firmly believe that Monica Woldring deserves to be recognized as a leader in the insurance world for her services rendered to the profession, her ongoing achievements in her career, and her steadfast contribution to the communities in which she lives and works,” writes a supporter.
“She is a role model and icon, having paved the way for women that have come after her,” writes another supporter. “We often joke that the top of her head is flat from hitting the glass ceiling so many times!”
It gives the CIP Society immense pleasure to recognize Monica with the 2019 Established Leader Award.
