In the decade that Adrian has spent in the industry, he has made a big mark in the area of insurance education. He has developed new courses, transitioned others to an online format, and continues to inspire, motivate and engage hundreds of students as an admired teacher. “(Adrian) takes pleasure in what he does and that helps him achieve his goals,” writes his nominator. “When you enjoy what you do you’ll not only want to do more of it, you’ll want to do it well. Adrian’s main passion is helping others succeed.”

Adrian takes his own insurance education very seriously. Within two years of joining the industry, he completed his CIP, FCIP and CRM designations, and is planning to complete his MBA next. To help him hone the craft of teaching mature students, Adrian completed a certificate in Adult Learning and Development at the University of Toronto’s Ontario Institute for Studies in Education. He also completed his Certified Training and Development Professional (CTDP) designation in 2012.

Adrian joined the industry as a Sales Advisor for Aviva Canada and discovered his passion for teaching early on, coaching new hires and developing job aids to help his team succeed. Shortly after completing his CIP, he enrolled in the Insurance Institute’s Teaching Techniques course and immediately after that began teaching CIP courses, starting with C14: Auto Insurance Part 1. In 2007, inspired by his university experience, Adrian approached the Institute about offering online classes; in fall 2008 he delivered his first online CIP course using the Moodle platform. Based on the overwhelming positive feedback, the Institute began offering more online courses: two in the following year, then four the year after that. Today, there are 14 online courses offered through the GTA Chapter alone.

Adrian’s CIP students are not shy to shower him with praise. “Adrian is an excellent instructor and I would absolutely take any course instructed by him,” writes one student. Another one writes: “He engages the entire class and provides extremely helpful examples to ensure everyone understands the course content. Adrian is by far the best teacher I have had at the Institute and ideally would like him to teach all courses.” Not surprisingly, Adrian has received the Institute’s Instructor of the Year Award in 2008, 2010, and 2012.

In his current position as Manager, Learning & Development at Northbridge Financial Corp., Adrian has created a new series of online courses, which starts with basic ‘insurance 101’ courses and continues with courses on understanding trends in the industry and more technical topics, to help prepare employees for the CIP. The series has contributed to the company’s overall 98% passing rate for CIP courses (2013 CIP exams). Adrian is also working on a recruitment program, visiting universities and colleges across Canada to share his excitement for the industry. Adrian uses his passion to connect with millennials and encourage them to consider working in insurance.

Recently, Adrian helped launch the Institute’s Understanding Serious Injury program and now moderates the 8-day program in the GTA. He has also volunteered his time for the development of the highly-praised CIP Instructor Certification Program, and the revision of C13 and C14 textbooks. He is a member of the General Insurance Learning Council and meets quarterly with representatives of the major carriers to discuss the latest trends in learning and development.

He is described by those who know him as honest and humble, with a great sense of humour, a leader that can help his team members laugh at – and learn from – their mistakes instead of dwelling on them. He creates a positive work environment marked by trust that fosters a good work ethic. “As a humble leader, Adrian spends more time praising others than he does patting himself on the back,” writes his nominator. “His focus on those around him has led so many others to their goals. That’s why it’s so important… to put the focus back on him and recognize him with this deserving award.”

Adrian’s caring and selfless nature spills over to his support of important causes, including the Women in Insurance Cancer Crusade. He has been team captain for Relay for Life for the last four years, helping to raise over $60,000. Last year alone, his Northbridge team was 60 members large and raised $35,000. With his previous employer, Intact Insurance, he volunteered with Raising the Roof and organized groups of employees to sell toques at Union Station and St. Andrew Station in Toronto. He’s also been involved in Movember, and supports many charities including The United Way, the JDRF Ride for Diabetes Research, and the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

The CIP Society celebrates Adrian’s achievements and is very proud to recognize him as a 2014 Emerging Leader.
