'Online-Timed' Alternate Exams

The online timed exam format is available for candidates who do not meet the system requirements for virtual proctoring, or require proctoring services in French. Please note Agent, Broker and Adjuster licensing exams are not eligible for this option.

Before you can apply to write the online-timed exam, you must complete and submit a declaration form, confirming that you will abide by the Examination rules and conditions listed. Please select Steps to Register below.

Please note, after December 2021 session, Online Timed Examinations will no longer be offered.

Online-timed exams will be written on the specific dates and times listed below with no exceptions. There is no option to choose or change the time and day of your exam. If you have a scheduling conflict, please contact Member Services.

  • All exams are closed book and must be written in the same format. If you are registered for multiple exams in the December 2020 session, and apply for an online-timed exam format, all your exams will be moved to this format.

  • The times allotted for examinations are as follows:

  - CIP examinations – 2 hours and 45 minutes
  - GIE examinations – 2 hours
  - Risk Management examinations – 1 hour and 30 minutes

  • If you miss your scheduled exam for any reason, you must defer your exam to the next exam session. A $100 rescheduling fee may apply.

  • Exams must be written on the dates and times outlined in the schedule without exception.

  - Confirm your exam time and day by logging into the IIC exam portal at least 2-3 days before your exam date. If you do not see your exam, contact Member Services immediately. If you fail to do so, and miss your exam, you must defer to the next exam session and a $100 rescheduling fee may apply.

  • You must submit the Online-Timed Exam Declaration form to register for this alternate format. A new declaration is required each exam session.

  • Exams are timed but the timer does not begin until you start your examination.

  • You cannot pause your exam once you begin. You must complete your exam in the time allotted.

  • You have 30 minutes from your start time to launch your exam. You will be marked absent if you do not start your examination within 30 minutes of the start time.

  • Do not open multiple browser tabs once logged into the Exam.

  • Do not log into the Exam portal in multiple browser windows.


System Requirements

The following are the minimum system requirements needed to write an online timed exam:

A desktop or laptop.
Personal computers are strongly recommended. However, if you must use a work computer to take an online exam, below are some additional configuration recommendations to reduce the risk of technical issues. You may also need to contact your organization’s IT support representative in advance of your exam day to make some of these changes.

  • Disable any applicable browser or internet firewall settings.

  • Make sure that you are not connected to a Virtual Private Network (VPN).

  • Ensure that you are not using a web browser with proprietary security settings established by your company.

  • Disable any applicable software designed to record or monitor your screen.


Secure and stable internet connection. Connect to the internet via a wired connection (i.e. Ethernet connection), if possible. Wifi connections generally carry a higher risk of disruption, so if you do not have strong wifi connectivity, consider wired connection

Steps to register for the online-timed exam format

1. Confirm you meet the system requirements.
2. Review the online-timed exam policies.
3. Submit the Online-Timed Declaration form.
4. Once your registration has been approved, you will be sent a booking confirmation email. Login to the IIC Exams portal 2-3 days prior to your exam and confirm you are scheduled for the correct exam date and time. You must do this before the exam date
5. Confirm you are booked for the correct exam. If you were required to select a course textbook edition, verify you selected the correct edition. Log in to your online IIC account and look under my courses>my textbook editions.

Accessing your exam

Log in to with your IIC member ID and password at least 10 minutes prior to your exam start time. Your exam(s) will be listed on the dashboard.

You cannot access or start your exam until the exact start time. Your online account displays the start time as 10:50 a.m. or 2:50 p.m., EST but you cannot begin your exam until 11 a.m. or 3 p.m EST.

1. At the scheduled start time, refresh/reload your browser window.
2. Your exam should now display ‘Write Exam’.
3. Click ‘Write Exam’ to start your exam.

While Accessing your Exam

If the button beside your exam displays "Book" – Refresh/reload your browser window (repeat up to 5 times). If the button continues to say "Book", contact Member Services immediately.

If the exam displays as ‘Currently not writable’ - you may have missed your exam. Please confirm your exam schedule and contact Member Services immediately.

During the Exam

Connection errors
Momentary interruptions in your internet connection may result in an answer saving error.

If you receive a notification, like the above – Select "Save Answer" on the affected question. You should then see a "successfully saved" notification.

If the question number displays in red that means your answers are not saved – Refresh your browser window (repeat up to 5 times).

If your internet connection is down, re-establish your connection – If you need to restart your computer to do so, you must select "Logout" at the top of the exam page first. Do not click “submit exam.” When you log back in, select "Resume" beside your exam. You will not lose time.

Unresponsive screen

If your screen becomes unresponsive during your exam – Refresh/reload your browser window.

If you cannot re-establish your connection, contact the Member Services immediately.
