OTL Agent & Level 1 Agent/broker Licensing exams

Licensing Exam Policies

Candidates are expected to abide by all OTL Agent / Level 1 Examination requirements and rules for writing an exam.

Rescheduling an exam

Candidates may reschedule an exam up to 24 hours prior to the exam start time at no charge. Log in to the Institute's exam portal and select Reschedule.

If less than 24 hours' notice is provided, contact your local Institute to arrange for a new registration. The original proctor fee is not refundable.

Rewrite policy

Starting in February 2026, candidates are eligible to write the Ontario Other Than Life (OTL) Agent’s Exam four times. After four failed attempts, they are subject to an 8-month waiting period following their fourth failed attempt. If a candidate attempts the exam during this 8-month period, the exam results will be nullified and will not count towards licensing, the waiting period will reset from their most recent attempt, and no refund will be provided.

Cancellation

To cancel a scheduled exam, contact your local institute at least 24 hours prior to the exam start time. The proctor fee is non-refundable if less than 24 hours' notice is provided. Other fees may also apply – contact your local institute for more information.

Absence

A candidate will be marked absent if they fail to log in to their exam at the scheduled start time. Contact your local Institute to arrange for a new registration. The original proctor fee is not refundable.

Accommodation

Licensing candidates with a documented disability or impairment (short-term/temporary or long-term/chronic) that substantially impacts their ability to participate equally in Insurance Institute examinations can request testing accommodations. Testing accommodations will be based on functional limitation(s) resulting from a documented disability or other restrictions due to a protected ground under human rights legislation that impact a students’ ability to take a midterm, test, or exam under standard conditions.
