Ontario - Insurance Agent - Other Than Life (OTL) Licence
Regulated by the Financial Services Commission of Ontario (FSCO), this licence is applicable to those employed by direct-response insurers, dealing directly with the public.
The Ontario Agents Licensing Kit forms the study material that you need to know in preparation to take your OTL exam. The kit is $246 plus GST/HST and includes the following:

*Please note: Any students writing their RIBO or OTL exam after June 1, 2016 should use the new Ontario Automobile Insurance Licensing Supplement addendum, which is now included with the kit outlined above.

Registering for the OTL Exam
The OTL exam fee is $110 plus HST (for each time you write) and must be paid for at time of registration. To register, please complete the OTL exam registration form with your credit card information and fax it to (416) 362-8081, or you can mail the completed form with a company cheque (made out to the Insurance Institute of Ontario) to the Insurance Institute of Ontario, 18 King Street East, 16th floor, Toronto, ON M5C 1C4, Attn: OTL Administrator. You will receive a receipt via email. Your receipt will also contain your exam confirmation information detailing the location, time and what to bring.
Every effort will be made to accommodate students on their preferred date; however, registration is on a first-come, first-served basis. For exams occurring outside of Toronto, exam registration requests must be received no later than three (3) business days prior to the exam (see exam schedules below). For exams in Toronto, the request must be received no later than 10 a.m. on the business day prior to the exam. Unfortunately, late requests cannot be accommodated.
•You need company sponsorship to obtain your licence, but do not need to be sponsored to write the exam. You have one (1) year from the day you pass the exam to get a sponsor for the licence.
•You must obtain a minimum of 75% on the exam to pass.
•The exam is two (2) hours long and consists of 100 multiple-choice questions.
•There is no limit to the number of times a candidate may attempt the OTL exam. However, the exam fee must be paid for each attempt.
•On the day of the exam, please come prepared with a copy of your confirmation/receipt, a pencil, eraser, non-programmable calculator, and government-issued photo identification (i.e., passport, driver’s licence, etc.), excluding health cards.
•Students will be allowed to enter the exam up to 30 minutes after the exam commences; however, no additional time will be given. Any students arriving after that time will be required to reschedule.

Please note, the OTL exam is based on the study material provided in the Ontario Agents Licensing Kit detailed above. To better prepare yourself for success in the OTL exam, we recommend you purchase the kit and and familiarize yourself with the materials in it.
Toronto: OTL exams are held every Monday and Wednesday at 9 a.m. Holidays excepted.
Outside Toronto: OTL exams are typically held on the third Monday of every month. (Please contact us for specific schedules for Hamilton, Kingston, Kitchener, London, Owen Sound, Ottawa, Sault Ste. Marie, Sudbury, Thunder Bay and Timmins).
Students wishing to reschedule their Other Than Life (OTL) agent’s exam will be subject to an administration fee of $20.00 plus HST.
Failure to appear for a scheduled OTL exam will result in a forfeiture of all exam fees - The Insurance Institute of Ontario does not issue refunds.
Licensing Body: Financial Services Commission of Ontario
• The body that regulates insurance licensing in Ontario is FSCO (Financial Services Commission of Ontario). For lapsed license reinstatement, license interchangability by province, or any other enquiries relating to licensing, please contact FSCO at 416-250-07250.
• If you already have your CIP and your role now requires you to be licensed, you are able to get equivalencies. Please contact FSCO via the contact details above.
Recognition Towards the CIP Program: Upon successful completion of this licensing course, you may be eligible to apply to the Insurance Institute to receive credit for C11 Principles and Practice of Insurance, one of the ten courses in the CIP program.
